Our Story

Lauchie and Rebecca are two joe-schmoes from the suburbs of Ottawa who have a passion for bees. Without much knowledge or any land to speak of, we jumped into beekeeping head first. We are now the proud bee-parents of two awesome colonies—Sunshine hive and Blue Skies hive. Along the way, we have met many wonderful people and we feel privileged to be part of the beekeeping community here in the Ottawa area. Serendipibee is a tribute to this remarkably, supportive community. We hope that others will find inspiration here.

After a season of planting pollinator-friendly gardens, beekeeping seemed like the next logical step for me. As an environmentalist and a vegan, I believe that my welfare is intimately linked to the health of the environment. I feel responsible for taking action when that environment is threatened. Pesticides, urbanization, and disease are among the most significant threats to the delicate honey bee. While I cannot change all of those things on my own, I can try to create safe spaces for bees and help educate others.

Why bees you may ask? Well, I see this as a wonderful opportunity at world domination by nurturing my own private insect army! Not only do they have a preprogrammed command and control apparatus, but they produce a yellow, sticky, viscous fluid useful for distracting adversaries with it’s delicious taste. Oh – and my wife thinks they’re cool. 😉
